Downspout Extension or French Drain? Start With Where the Water Comes From

A wet lawn does not automatically need a French drain. A downspout releasing hundreds of gallons beside the foundation may need a much simpler correction.

Another property may have no roof-water problem at all. Water may be moving downhill from a neighboring area, collecting in clay soil, crossing a patio, or sitting in a low section where surface drainage has no clear outlet.

We install several types of drainage systems, including downspout extensions, French drains, surface drains, catch basins, dry creek beds, grading, and resloping. We evaluate topography, soil, and water flow before selecting the solution. The right project begins with the source and path of the water.

Watch the property during rain

A dry-day estimate can identify grade and visible drainage features. Rain shows the system operating. During a steady storm, observe from a safe location where roof water exits, which downspouts overflow, whether water moves toward the house, which lawn areas fill first, whether water crosses a walkway, where mulch washes out, whether neighboring runoff enters, which drains accept water, which drains back up, where water eventually leaves, and how long puddles remain afterward.

Take wide photographs and short videos. Do not stand in moving water during lightning or another unsafe condition. The goal is giving us a real record of the water path.

A downspout extension solves a concentrated roof-water problem

When the main issue is roof water discharging too close to the building or into a sensitive landscape area, extending the outlet may be enough. A downspout extension can move the discharge toward a more suitable location.

The design still needs to answer where the water will end, whether the outlet creates another wet area, whether the route is above or below ground, whether mowing will affect it, whether it can freeze or become blocked, whether the grade carries water away, whether the final discharge is permitted, whether erosion will occur at the outlet, and whether maintenance access is available. "Move water farther away" is not a finished plan when the new endpoint is beside a neighbor's property or on a steep bare slope.

A catch basin collects surface water

A catch basin is designed to receive water arriving at the surface. It may be useful where runoff regularly reaches a low point, paved area, or another location where a defined inlet can collect it.

The basin needs a correct location, appropriate grade, outlet pipe, service access, debris management, a suitable discharge point, protection from settlement, and coordination with paving or landscaping. A basin installed slightly above the actual low point may remain dry while water collects beside it. Field elevation matters.

A French drain works below the surface

A French drain generally uses a stone-filled trench and perforated piping to collect and move subsurface water. It may be considered when the problem involves saturated soil or water moving through the ground rather than one visible stream crossing the surface.

We should evaluate soil, slope, depth, water source, outlet, existing utilities, tree roots, finished landscape, access for excavation, frost conditions, and maintenance expectations. A French drain without a useful outlet cannot make water disappear. The water still needs somewhere appropriate to go.

Surface drainage may be better than burying the problem

A dry creek bed or reshaped surface can move water visibly across the landscape. We list dry creek beds, surface-drainage systems, grading, and resloping among our options. A surface solution may offer easier inspection, landscape value, less hidden maintenance, the ability to carry larger storm flow, a clear outlet, integration with planting, and reduced reliance on buried pipe.

It also occupies visible space and must be designed so people can cross or maintain the area safely. The homeowner should decide whether the drainage feature should disappear into the property or become part of the landscape. Related planting after the work can connect to plantings and softscapes and mulch installation.

Grading can solve or create the entire problem

Changing the land surface can redirect runoff. That makes grading powerful and risky. Before resloping, we should consider foundation elevation, neighboring property, existing trees, patios and walks, driveway, septic or utilities, topsoil depth, lawn restoration, irrigation, retaining walls, drainage outlet, and municipal or HOA requirements.

Moving soil away from one low area can send the same water somewhere worse. The final grading plan should show the intended route.

Patios and walks need drainage coordination

A new patio creates an impervious surface where water no longer enters the soil in the same way. The project can change runoff volume and direction. We also install patios, walkways, and fire pits.

When drainage and outdoor living are both planned, settle together which way the patio pitches, where roof water goes, whether the walkway crosses a drainage path, whether a drain is needed, whether the outlet will be visible, whether water passes through a planting bed, whether snowmelt can leave the surface, whether future hardscape will block the drainage system, and how utilities will cross the area. Building the patio first and fixing runoff afterward can require opening finished work.

The lawn may need repair after the drainage project

Excavation and grading disturb turf. The proposal should state whether we include topsoil, seed, slit seeding, sod, mulch, bed restoration, irrigation repair, final grading, straw or erosion protection, and follow-up watering instructions.

We provide lawn care, overseeding, slit seeding, mowing, plantings, and bed work within the same company. That allows restoration to be coordinated with the drainage scope rather than left as an undefined final step. Properties that also use full-service maintenance can keep the finished surface on the same schedule afterward.

Keep drains visible enough to maintain

After installation, save a map of downspout connections, catch basins, French-drain routes, cleanouts, outlets, dry creek path, buried pipe, utility crossings, restored areas, and maintenance instructions. Do not bury every inlet and cleanout under mulch or new planting. A drainage system that cannot be found is difficult to inspect when the property changes several years later.

Ask for the reasoning, not only the product

The proposal should explain where the water begins, how it travels, why the selected system fits, where it ends, which storm conditions it is designed around, what is outside the scope, which maintenance is required, and which property changes could affect it.
