A 2"-3" layer of shredded bark mulch:
- Increases water infiltration by slowing the water droplet as it passes through the mulch; the reduced water movement makes moisture available longer.
- Reduces water and wind erosion.
- Reduces water evaporation from soil surface. Because mulches conserve soil moisture, roots undoubtedly will respond, producing greener growth in areas where moisture is more consistently available.
- Retards weed growth and adds humus to the soil.
- Keeps damaging mowers and string trimmers away from the sensitive bark at the base of your trees.
- Maintains uniform soil temperature which encourages root growth and provides soil moisture into the late fall.
- Research suggests that mulches stimulate soil organisms because of greater soil temperature and moisture consistency.
- Organic bark mulch can provide a food source for earthworms whose movement through the soil increases aeration. Their digested food contributes certain plant nutrients as well.
